AG Candidates' Debate (Club Events)
SAGUARO EASTSIDE DEMOCRATS HOST CANDIDATE DEBATE The three Democratic candidates for Arizona State Attorney General debated the issues at the June meeting of Saguaro Eastside Democrats(SED). Vince Rabago, David Lujan and Felecia Rotellini, who are all on the Aug. 24 Democratic Primary ballot, are the special guests of SED's meeting held on Monday, June 21 at New Spirit Lutheran Church.

May 2010 Fundraiser Dance/Party (Club Events)
Saguaro Eastside Democrats held a Springfest Fundraiser dance/party Sunday May 16th from 5 to 7:30 at Shall We Dance Studio with live music by a local band, The Gotes. Shall We Dance Studio is at 4101 E. Grant Road (east of Alvernon and west of Columbus on the north side of Grant).

April Meeting (Club Events)
APRIL MEETING, FRIDAY APRIL 23. Saguaro Eastside Democrats held a special meeting on Friday, April 23 at New Spirit Lutheran Church, 8701 E. Old Spanish Trail (northeast corner at Camino Seco). Guest Speakers were AZ State Senator Paula Aboud, ranking Democrat on the Senate Appropriations Committee, and Democratic Candidate for the US Senate Rodney Glassman, who recently resigned from his Tucson city Council seat to pursue his candidacy. Sen. Aboud focused on Prop. 100 which will, if passed in the upcoming may special election, increase the state sales tax rate. She also spoke about other recent activities in the Senate. Glassman spoke about making his decision to run for the US Senate.

Andrei Cherny, Candidate for State Treasurer and SED Annual Meeting (Club Events)
ANDREI CHERNY SPEAKS TO EASTSIDE DEMOCRATS Andrei Cherny, Democratic candidate for Arizona State Treasurer, was the guest speaker at the Saguaro Eastside Democrats (SED) meeting on Monday, January 18, 2010, followed by a short annual meeting to elect 2010's officers. Cherny talked about his candidacy and the need to invest in Arizona's future to create jobs and make Arizona "The Solar State". Cherny is a former Arizona Assistant Attorney General and a nationally recognized authority on public policy. The founder and co-editor of Democracy: A Journal of Ideas, Cherny is also a contributor to a wide range of publications, including The New York Times, the Washington Post, the Huffington Post and the New Republic. 2010 officers were elected at the business meeting. Pickwick Papers, December Fundraiser/meeting (Club Events)

Political Blogs (Club Events)
SAGUARO EASTSIDE DEMS FOCUS ON POLITICAL BLOGS The hows and whys of political blogging were the very interesting subject of the November 16th meeting of Saguaro Eastside Democrats (SED). Three local bloggers, Ted Prezelski of Rum, Romanism & Rebellion http://www.rumromanismrebellion.net, Sandra Spangler of 26Dems http://26dems.blogspot.com, and David Safier who can be found at Blogforarizona http://arizona.typepad.com , discussed how they mix information about both national and local issues with witty commentary and insider's gossip. The meeting will be held on Monday, November 16, at New Spirit Lutheran Church, 8701 E. Old Spanish Trail (northeast corner of Camino Seco). The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. with light refreshments and time for socializing. The panel of speakers takes over at 7 p.m. with ample time allocated for an audience question and answer period. Meet Democratic City Council Candidates (Club Events)
On Monday, October 19, Saguaro Eastside Democrats met with 2009 Democratic City Council candidates Karin Uhlich (Ward 3), Richard Fimbres (Ward 5) and Nina Trasoff (Ward 6). The candidates discussed their candidacies and the importance of voters' understanding the issues which will be on the November 3 ballot, including Proposition 200 (calling for a city charter change) and the TUSD override (Propositions 401 and 402).

September Roundtable (Club Events)
On Monday, September 21, Eastsiders had an opportunity to participate in a round table discussion about current issues facing Arizona voters with Adam Kinsey, Executive Director of Pima County Democratic Party and Gilberto Zaragosa, Southern Arizona Field Director of Organizing for America. The two major topics discussed were health care and Tucson's Proposition 200.

Panel provided Insight into Rio Nuevo (Club Events)
On Monday, June 15, the Saguaro Eastside Democrats (SED) offered Eastsiders an opportunity to learn more about the Downtown Development known as Rio Nuevo and what it means for the city at large. Panelists were longtime environmental activist Gayle Hartmann who offered a cultural and historical perspective on the project and downtown businessman Jeff DiGregorio, president of the Iron Horse Neighborhood Association. Before the panel spoke, we watched a 7 1/2 minute DVD presentation on downtown development prepared by Councilperson Nina Trasoff and her office.

Water Sustainability in Pima County (Club Events)
PANEL ON WATER SUSTAINABILITY IN PIMA COUNTY On Monday, May 18, the Saguaro Eastside Democrats (SED) hosted a panel discussion on the recently completed Phase One of the joint County/City Water and Waste Water Study. Panelists were to include the city/county coordinators on the Oversight Committee, Nicole Ewing Gavin, Assistant to City Manager, and Melaney Seacat, Senior Program Manager from Pima County’s Waste Water Department. Ms Gavin was unable to attend and Chris Avery filled in for her. Sean Sullivan, a member of the County/City Water Study Oversight Committee and Associate Director of the Coalition for Sonoran Desert Protection completed the panel. The panelists provided an overview of the key findings of the study and discussed the status of the Phase II effort, including factors influencing water sustainability here in Pima County. A question and answer period from the audience followed.

Fireside Chats with FDR (Club Events)
The Top Hat Theatre presented a special performance of its play, "Fireside Chats with FDR", on Saturday, April 25, 2009, from 6 to 9 p.m. This performance was sponsored by the Saguaro Eastside Democrats. A highlight of the evening was the appearance of FDR's granddaughter, Nina Roosevelt Gibson, who discussed her grandparents, especially her grandmother with whom she lived while growing up.

2009 Education Crisis (Club Events)
On Monday, March 23 the Saguaro Eastside Democrats (SED) hosted a panel discussion focusing on the state of education here in Arizona. The two panelists were Rhonda Ball, President of the Amphi Education Association, and TUSD Board Member Mark Stegeman. The panelists discussed how state budget cuts have effected local education. The audience asked the panelists a number of questions..

2009 Annual Business Meeting (Club Events)
Our first meeting of 2009 including our annual business meeting was held Monday January 19th. Grant Winston spoke about efforts to create a local United Steelworkers Associates Member club, and Katie Maass updated us on Ward 2 matters and the completion of Rodney Glassman's first year in office. At our business meeting, the treasurer reported on our finances after our donations to last year's campaigns. The election of officers and at-large board members for 2009 was then held. Much to the joy of the continuing officers, three new people have joined the board this year. The Board of Saguaro Eastside Democrats normally meets on the second Monday of the month, although this is subject to change. All members are welcome to attend. The next meeting is scheduled for August 30, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. at Robert Lupp's house.

Rosemont Mine and Dem. Conv. Reports (Club Events)
Kyle Dignoti, a high school student who observed the convention as part of a national program, reported on what he saw, heard and did during the four day convention. Following his presentation, activist Gayle Hartmann offered a comprehensive look at what is happening down in the Santa Rita Mountains concerning the proposed new mining operation. Following this, we held a business meeting at which the new bylaws were presented to the membership. Also, representatives of various campaign groups made pleas for assistance.

Ballot Propositions (Club Events)
About 50 people attended our open meeting on Monday, August 18, in which the audience reviewed the many propositions that were under consideration for the November ballot. Roger White moderated the interesting event. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords attended the social meeting prior to the formal program. As there were so many people in attendance, she also spoke to the group as a whole and took several questions.
